The political situation in Canada
King Charles' message to Trump: "Back off"
King Charles is in Canada to lovebomb the country and say: "back off, Donald", writes Politico. The British king, who is also the head of state of the former colony of Canada, is to give a so-called throne speech on Tuesday when the Canadian parliament opens.
It is highly unusual for a monarch to give a throne speech in Canada, but Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited the king to emphasize the country's sovereignty over the United States - in the wake of Donald Trump repeatedly calling it a 51st state.
The throne speech should therefore be seen as "a gesture of solidarity" and an expression of support, historian Robert Bothwell told the AP news agency.
Canadian royal historian Justin Vovk is on the same track and in an interview with the BBC he calls the move "a theatrical display intended to show what separates Canadians from Americans".
Climate Threat Global Challenges
Poor Countries' Climate Note: Thousands of Billions
Climate change has cost the world's poorest countries over SEK 3,700 billion since the turn of the millennium, writes The Independent based on figures from researchers at the international think tank ODI Global.
This includes, among other things, destroyed crops in 53 poor countries, as a result of extreme weather such as floods and droughts.
- This is the reality for many countries that are on the front lines of the climate crisis, despite having barely contributed to global emissions, says Mike Childs of the environmental organization Friends of the Earth.
