Political situation in Venezuela

Maduro claims victory in disputed election in Venezuela

Venezuela's incumbent President Nicolás Maduro has declared himself the winner of the disputed election this weekend. There were no independent election observers on site and the opposition chose to boycott the vote, reports the New York Times.

The autocratic leader says he won a legitimate landslide victory with 83 percent of the vote.

The election exposes the cracks in Venezuela's opposition, reports AFP. One of the largest opposition groups called for a complete boycott of the election, while another faction believed that previous boycotts had only given Maduro more power.

Taken together, the weekend's events mean that the opposition is now deprived of almost all influence in the country and that the regime's power is further consolidated.

Venezuelan people risk their lives to flee the US

Under the Trump administration, many of the Venezuelans who have fled to the US in recent years have begun to heed calls to “self-deport”. This is reported by the New York Times.

Many risked their lives when they made the hundreds of miles between the countries, which include going through the inhospitable jungle of the Darién Gap. Now they are taking the same route back, including via risky boat trips between Panama and Colombia.

“It is a shattered dream,” says Junior Sulbarán, who has boarded a boat with his infant daughter and about 40 compatriots – many of them with their belongings in garbage bags.

The migrants are offered the equivalent of around 10,000 kronor to leave the US voluntarily.
