South American cold

Unusual cold in Argentina – sub-zero temperatures

While severe heat waves have hit Europe and North America, South American countries have been hit by an unusual cold snap, Reuters reports. In the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, the thermometer showed freezing temperatures on Tuesday, which is unusual even though it is the winter season.

The news agency reports unexpected snowfall, not only in Argentina but also in neighboring countries Chile and Uruguay, after cold winds blew in from Antarctica to the south, shocking residents whose homes and offices are not built for such weather.

According to La Nación, it was just over five degrees below zero in Buenos Aires on Monday – the sixth lowest temperature in 118 years. The cold has prompted authorities to issue weather warnings for several days ahead.

“You cover yourself with what you have – like an onion”

Unusual low temperatures have prompted residents of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires to pull out their warmest clothes. Juan Manuel Amnini, a 42-year-old engineer, wearing a woolen hat and face shield, told Reuters that he had almost “froze to death.”

“You cover yourself with whatever you have. Underneath this, I have layers of clothes, like an onion.”

It is winter in Argentina, but according to the news agency, it is unusual for the temperature to drop below zero, as was the case on Monday and Tuesday.
