The situation in North Korea

New beach resort to boost North Korean economy

Pictures of happy beachgoers were broadcast on North Korean state television as the new beach resort of Wonsan-Kalma opened its gates to domestic tourists on Wednesday, DW reports. Next week, Russian tourists are also expected to visit the city, which is located on the country's east coast and is expected to be able to accommodate 20,000 visitors.

"The hearts of the guests were filled with overwhelming emotions as they witnessed the astonishing new heights of the tourism culture flourishing under the Workers' Party era," said state television channel KCNA.

The investment in a "world-class tourist resort" is intended to be an engine for the North Korean economy and is described as being close to the heart of leader Kim Jong-Un.

"North Korea's Waikiki" is Kim's pet project

According to analysts, Kim Jong-Un is very keen to develop the country's tourism, writes Deutsche Welle. The newly opened seaside resort of Wonsan-Kalma is described as one of the North Korean leader's heart projects.

In South Korean media, the project is called "North Korea's Waikiki". Authorities in South Korea estimate that the idea is that the resort, which can currently accommodate 20,000 visitors, will grow over time. But since transport options from the capital Pyongyang are considered limited, the neighboring country believes that the seaside paradise will remain small, with around 170 visitors per day.

Kim Jong-Un has promised more similar tourism initiatives on a large scale.
