The tariff crisis Trump’s tariff policy

Trump to Japan: You are not doing what we want – tariffs are being raised

With only days left until Donald Trump's tariff break expires on July 9, the US president has threatened to raise tariffs on Japan. This is reported by the Financial Times.

On Monday, Trump tried to put pressure on Japan by urging the country to buy American rice. Japan responded that it will not sacrifice domestic farmers just to secure tariff relief from the US.

– I will write to them and say 'thank you very much, we know that you cannot do what we want, and therefore you will have to pay 30 percent, 35 percent' or whatever figure we set, says Trump.

Third agreement complete – Trump agrees with Vietnam

The US and Vietnam have reached an agreement on trade. Donald Trump announced this on Truth Social.

Imports from Vietnam will be subject to 20 percent tariffs and goods transhipped in the country to 40 percent. The US will also receive “total access” to the Vietnamese market.

“In other words, they will ‘open their market to the US’, which means that we will be able to sell our products to Vietnam duty-free,” the president writes.

The 90-day tariff break expires next week, on July 9. In addition to Vietnam, the US has reached agreements with the UK and China, writes Direkt.

Expert: Put us in a bad spot – the Americans know it

On Thursday, negotiations between the US and the EU will begin in Washington ahead of the deadline next week. Experts that Dagens Industri has spoken to believe that Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic will have a tough time.

One problem for the EU is that it has not countered with counter-tariffs, and that the focus will therefore be on Donald Trump’s demands. This is the reasoning of Tobias Gehrke, a researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

“We have put ourselves in a bad position and the Americans know it,” he tells the newspaper.

The image in the media has been divided ahead of the talks. The Financial Times has written that Sefcovic has been urged to be tough on himself so that the EU gets rid of most of Trump’s tariffs. Bloomberg has also reported that the EU is ready to accept the general tariffs but that it will seek exemptions in important areas.

Trump’s tariff break expires on Wednesday, July 9.
