NATO's Future

Poland was taken aback by the US military announcement

Poland, one of the US's closest allies in Europe, was completely unprepared for the US announcement that a deployment of 4,000 American soldiers would be halted. This is reported by Politico.

The Polish government is now trying to figure out how to respond, but insists that the announcement will not affect the country's security.

- We have received assurances that the Americans do not plan to systematically reduce the military presence in Poland, says Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski.

It is still unknown why US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has called Poland an "ideal ally" because they have NATO's largest defense spending in terms of GDP, chose to stop the deployment at the last second.

US halts deployment of troops to Poland

The US Department of Defense has abruptly halted the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, sources told the New York Times.

According to the sources, the halted deployment is part of the US's restructuring of forces in Europe.

Two weeks ago, the Pentagon announced its intention to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. At the same time, it also halted planned deployments of missile systems in Europe.

The decisions came after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized Donald Trump for the war in Iran. However, why the decision to halt the deployment of troops to Poland was made is unclear.

Merz: I don't want my children to study in the US

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz no longer recommends young people to move to the US due to the worsening "social climate", reports Politico.

- Today I would not recommend my children to move to the US to study or work, he says during a meeting for German Catholics - a statement that was met with applause.

Even the most highly educated Americans are having a hard time getting a job today, says Merz. He adds that he admires the US, but that "admiration is not growing right now".

The gap between Merz and Trump has grown in recent weeks after Merz said that the US was "humiliated" by Iran and started the war without a clear plan.

Trump responded by canceling the deployment of 5,000 US troops in Poland.
