Israel’s President: “Stop climbing trees”
The rival political sides in Israel must come to terms with the election results and do everything in their power to avoid a snap election, says the country’s president, Isaac Herzog.
“It is time to tell the party leaders: Stop climbing trees and come to terms with reality,” Herzog said during a state memorial ceremony on Sunday evening, as reported by The Times of Israel.
The president added that politicians are welcome to meet with him starting Wednesday to make progress on forming a government.
In Tuesday’s election, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition emerged slightly larger than the opposition coalition led by Gadi Eisenkot, but neither bloc holds a majority. This means the Arab-Israeli opposition could potentially hold the balance of power; however, so far, neither side has indicated a willingness to invite these parties to join them.
