There are twenty days left. On election night, one of them will be met with cheers. And the other begins to prepare his departure.

Dead heat

If Ulf Kristersson loses, his time as party leader is over. He has lost two elections and been voted down in more prime ministerial polls than anyone else. Either he resigns himself on election night, or he is dragged out of his party.

Magdalena Andersson became party leader last fall, when confidence in the Social Democrats was at rock bottom. If she loses, she leaves the post of prime minister, but remains as party leader.

Based on today's opinion polls, it is impossible to know which scenario is most likely. It's a dead race while election day creeps ever closer.

Horror propaganda

On Monday, August 1, the Moderates presented their election campaign. Now we have heard the horror propaganda broadcast for a couple of weeks. Four parties have run a joint negative campaign on gang crime, electricity prices, forced busing and property tax.

But we haven't heard much about what happens to security if Ulf Kristersson becomes prime minister. Not so surprising, since the message is much more difficult to sell to the Swedish people.

M wants to lower the unemployment insurance fund

During the pandemic, social security was improved to strengthen financial security during the crisis. S has promised to make those reinforcements permanent.

Ulf Kristersson is going to the polls on deteriorating the unemployment insurance fund. For the construction worker with a monthly salary of SEK 33,000, this would mean up to SEK 7,000 less per month.

Kristersson was Minister of Insurance

Kristersson was minister 2011–14. The most lasting impression was his work to kick people off health insurance.

If the Moderates get the chance again, they will resume their attacks on wage earners' security in the event of illness. Severely ill people must finance the tax reductions, through additional waiting days, reduced compensation levels and out-of-insurance.

SD nothing to hold in hand

The Sweden Democrats often claim that they are on the side of wage earners, but reality speaks a different language. Jimmie Åkesson has admitted that the level of the unemployment insurance fund is a matter of negotiation with the Moderates. And the party itself in the Riksdag has voted to kick people out of health insurance.

The moderates wrap it up in beautiful words about the "work line". But behind the rhetoric lies the old right-wing idea of weakening people's security in order to force them to take jobs at lower wages.

There are more than Ulf Kristersson who benefit from a moderate election victory. But you hardly do.

What does it mean to have a strong unemployment insurance and health insurance? Do you have experience with the cuts in health insurance? What will happen to social security and health insurance if the Moderates get power?

Editor-in-chief Peter Gustavsson chatted with readers.
