Nancy Pelosi has landed in Taiwan.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives thus defies China's threat that the visit will have consequences.
In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry says the visit is "extremely dangerous".
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has landed i Taiwan , AP writes. Just before 23.00 local time (17.00 Swedish time), the 82-year-old's plane landed.
She was received by Taiwanese representatives.
Shortly after she landed, Pelosi released(uttalande) a statement on the government's website.
"Our congressional delegation's visit to Taiwan honors the unwavering commitment of the United States to support Taiwan's democracy," she said.
"Promote common interests"
In the statement, she also says that the visit to Asia focuses on security, economy and democracy.
"Our discussions with the leadership in Taiwan will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner as well as advancing our shared interests, including promoting a free and open Pacific region," she said.
During the day, China has repeated its warnings that the visit will have consequences.
Nancy Pelosi emphasizes that the visit in no way opposes the US-China relationship.

Shortly after Nancy Pelosi landed, the Chinese military announced that it will conduct six military exercises around Taiwan between Thursday and Sunday, writes the Chinese newspaper Global Times.
The Ministry of Defense writes on the government's website that the exercises will begin already in the evening.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also gave its view on the visit in a statement. They called the US actions "extremely dangerous", according to AFP.
"He who plays with fire will be consumed by it," they write.
China also promises "targeted military actions" in response to Pelosi's visit, the news agency writes.

I uttalandet säger hon också att besöket i Asien fokuserar på säkerhet, ekonomi och demokrati.

Nancy Pelosi understryker att besöket inte på något sätt motverkar USA och Kinas relation.
