Missing submarine at Titanic
British billionaire aboard the missing mini-sub
British billionaire and adventurer Hamish Harding is on board the mini-submarine that has disappeared in the Atlantic during an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic. This is confirmed by his family on Facebook, reports Sky News.
Harding himself wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday that he would dive to the wreck with a submarine from the company Oceangate. The company has confirmed that it is one of their submarines that is missing.
According to Harding, "a couple of legendary explorers" who have made over 30 dives to the wreck since 1980 would be on board. He also wrote that the trip will probably be the only one this year, due to difficult weather.
The US Coast Guard has told The Guardian that five people should be on board. A large search and rescue operation is underway.
Reporter traveled with the submarine last year: "Experimental"
Last year, CBS reporter David Pogue accompanied aboard one of the Oceangate company's mini-submarines down to the wreck of the Titanic in the Atlantic. In the feature that resulted from the trip, he is shown around the craft by Oceangate founder Stockton Rush.
He also reads from what appears to be an agreement, where the passenger must confirm that he understands that the craft is "experimental" and is not approved by any authority. It also states that travel can cause "physical injury, disability, emotional trauma and death".
- Where do I sign, says Pogue with a smile, before signing the paper.
In the feature, the craft gets into trouble on two occasions before Pogue gets to accompany her down to the wreck of the Titanic on the third try.
One of Oceangate's vessels disappeared on Monday during an expedition to the Titanic. According to information to The Guardian, five people should be on board.
