Finland to withdraw from anti-personnel mine treaty

Finland plans to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention, which bans the stockpiling, production, sale and use of anti-personnel mines. This was announced by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo at a press conference, according to news agencies.

This means that the Finnish military can start stockpiling mines again for the first time since the country approved the international Ottawa Treaty in 2012.

“Finland and Europe must take all measures to strengthen our deterrence and defense capabilities. Individually and in NATO,” he says.

Poland and the Baltic countries stated last month that they will withdraw from the convention due to the military threat from neighboring Russia.
