The chat scandal became too much for Trump.

That's why security adviser Mike Waltz is now resigning, according to US expert Dag Blanck.

- It had gone too far, he says.

Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz  was the one who accidentally added The Atlantic's editor-in-chief to the infamous war chat on Signal.

The chat discussed sensitive details about attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen, with, among others, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance.

The scandal was a fact – and the fact that Waltz is now resigning is not at all surprising, says Dag Blanck, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

– He became a burden for President Trump. What Waltz did was catastrophic, I think, says Blanck.

But Trump has had Waltz's back in the past. Why has he changed his  mind now ?

– It has simply gone too far. He wanted to support him, but realized that it was not possible when it was such a big fad.

Hegseth next in line?

There have also been demands for the resignation of Defense Minister Pete Hegseth. Now it remains to be seen whether he too will disappear from the Trump administration.

– We will see. Hegseth is also very much questioned in many quarters, not least from within the Pentagon. Trump is reluctant to get rid of people. But what you can note with Trump is that his employees must be loyal, Trump has no problem letting people go, loyalty is a one-way street. When he believes they are becoming a burden, and we have seen many examples of that, then they have to resign, says Dag Blanck.

Trump announced today on his platform Truth Social that Waltz has instead been appointed as the new UN ambassador.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily take on the role of national security adviser.
