Merz met Macron: "Our ties will become stronger"
The ties between Germany and France will be further strengthened. This is what the new Chancellor Friedrich Merz says after his meeting with President Emmanuel Macron.
- Thank you for what we have already done and decided, says Macron at a joint press conference, reports TT.
The two leaders promise, among other things, a joint Franco-German defense council that will meet regularly and cooperate on common challenges. At the same time, it is stated that all EU countries need to invest more in defense and that support for Ukraine is firm.
The trip to Paris is Merz's first after being elected Chancellor on Monday.
Injured Friedrich Merz sets off on a European trip
Germany's new Chancellor Friedrich Merz begins his term with two summits in Europe. On Wednesday, he will travel to Paris and Warsaw for meetings with Emmanuel Macron and Donald Tusk.
An injured Merz, who humiliatingly lost the first vote in the Bundestag before being elected in the second, hopes to show unity with Macron. The goal is to paint the picture that Europe's engines, France and Germany, have a common path forward, writes AP.
The soon-to-be 70-year-old Chancellor jogged aboard the government plane before the trip to Paris, according to Sveriges Radio's Berlin correspondent Daniel Alling.
"It is important, not least after yesterday, to create images and impressions of energy," Alling writes on X.
