In the newly built city of Tatu City, 25,000 people have moved in and over 100 companies have established themselves. But the entrepreneur behind the project, Preston Mendenhall, is fighting against the widespread corruption in the country, writes AFP.
Many local politicians have seen the city as a target for blackmail. Mendenhall says that local governors have demanded influence and that they will get parts of the city completely free. He has also been accused in four different defamation cases. But his counterattack is unusual in Africa – to make the blackmail attempts public.
- They thought we would leave the country. But we have a time horizon of 50 years. We believe it is right to challenge those who are trying to blackmail us, he says.
Despite all the resistance, he stands behind his investment. He believes that Kenya is the economic center of the region, and that Nairobi will become the "capital of Africa".
Built a city from scratch – 100 companies have moved there
The city of Tatu City outside Nairobi in Kenya is owned and constructed by a private company. It has already attracted 25,000 people and several large companies, reports AFP.
Due to the low taxes, and the fact that the city is self-sufficient in electricity and water, over 100 companies have established themselves there. The company Rendeavour is behind the initiative and they have built a total of six cities in several African countries – Tatu City is the most advanced.
While the owner, American Preston Mendenhall, is fighting widespread corruption, his initiative is also appreciated by Kenyan politicians.
- They understand our vision behind the project and how many jobs it has created, he tells AFP.

Många lokala politiker har sett staden som ett mål för utpressning. Mendenhall berättar att lokala guvernörer krävt inflytande och att de ska få delar av staden helt gratis. Han har också anklagats i fyra olika förtalsmål. Men hans motattack är ovanlig i Afrika – att offentliggöra utpressningsförsöken.
– De trodde att vi skulle lämna landet. Men vi har en tidshorisont på 50 år. Vi tror att det är rätt att utmana de som försöker utpressa oss, säger han.
Trots allt motstånd står han bakom sin investering. Han anser att Kenya är det ekonomiska centrumet i regionen, och att Nairobi kommer bli ”Afrikas huvudstad”.
Byggde stad från grunden – 100 företag har flyttat dit
Staden Tatu City utanför Nairobi i Kenya ägs och har konstruerats av ett privat bolag. Den har redan lockat 25 000 personer och flera stora företag, rapporterar AFP.
På grund av de låga skatterna, och att staden är självförsörjande med el och vatten, har över 100 företag etablerats där. Företaget Rendeavour ligger bakom initiativet och de har totalt byggt sex städer i flera afrikanska länder – Tatu City är den mest avancerade.
Samtidigt som ägaren, amerikanen Preston Mendenhall, kämpar med utbredd korruption är hans initiativ också uppskattat av kenyanska politiker.
– De förstår vår vision bakom projektet och hur många jobbtillfällen det har skapat, säger han till AFP.
