The military in Pakistan has been given the green light to attack India.

The order comes from the prime minister himself.

The Indian airstrikes against Pakistan last night will be responded to forcefully, the government announced in a press release.

The announcement comes after Pakistan's security council met in an emergency meeting on Wednesday morning, Swedish time.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif himself is said to have given the Pakistani military the go-ahead to launch a counterattack against India, Reuters reports.

The loss will be avenged

According to the government's press release, the attacks last night were seen as a war crime in violation of international conventions, and that it therefore has every right to respond to the attacks.

"Pakistan reserves the right to respond in self-defense - at a time, place and in a manner of its own choosing - to avenge the loss of innocent Pakistani lives and the flagrant violation of its sovereignty," they wrote in the press release.

India's military claimed at a press conference earlier in the day that the airstrikes last night were only carried out against terror-linked targets in Pakistan.

“Made-up terrorist camps”

The attacks were carried out in response to the terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area in mid-April, where 26 people were shot dead.

According to Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri, there had been indications that more attacks were in the works. At the press conference, the Pakistani government was accused of not wanting to help find those responsible for the attack.

– No steps have been taken by Pakistan to stop this, he says.

Started shooting last night

Pakistan, however, rejects the accusations, and calls the places bombed last night “made-up terrorist camps”.

According to the Indian military, 15 Indian civilians are said to have died in the attacks, reports the BBC. Pakistan has not commented on the death toll.

According to Pakistani authorities, 30 people have died in the airstrikes overnight, AP reports.

The Kashmir conflict

The Kashmir conflict is a long-standing territorial dispute between India and Pakistan, both of which claim the entire region. The conflict has its roots in the partition of British India in 1947, when Kashmir became a disputed region. Since then, several wars have erupted between the two countries over the area.

In 2019, the Indian government revoked the autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, further increasing tensions. The latest escalation began after a terrorist attack on April 22, 2025 in Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed.

India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, something Pakistan denies.
