Kremlin: Putin-Trump meeting needed
A meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump is “necessary,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked by reporters, Reuters reports.
“Such a meeting is obviously on everyone’s lips,” Peskov said.
He added, however, that extensive preparations are needed for such a meeting, but that none have yet been made.
Trump has previously said that he and Putin “probably” will meet during his visit to Saudi Arabia, which will take place between May 13 and 16. Peskov now says that Putin has no trip to the Middle East scheduled for mid-May.
Trump and Putin have had several phone calls this year as the US tries to broker peace in Ukraine, but Putin has not met with an American president since a meeting with Joe Biden in 2021.• The international response

Lithuania invests one billion euros in strengthened borders
Lithuania is allocating over one billion euros (over ten billion kronor) to strengthen its borders with Russia and Belarus, reports AFP. The bulk of it will be spent on anti-tank mines. It also plans to purchase anti-drone systems and strengthen surveillance at the border.
In cooperation with Latvia and Estonia, preparedness is also being developed along NATO's eastern border to "effectively disrupt and stop any hostile intrusions across the border," writes Lithuanian public service channel LRT.
The three Baltic countries have strengthened their defenses since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
