Tariff crisis Trump's tariff policy

Trump's luxury project takes shape amid negotiations

At the same time as the US and Vietnam hold trade talks, Donald Trump's family company, the Trump Organization, is planning to build a luxury golf complex outside Hanoi, the New York Times reports. As negotiations have intensified, the construction process has moved forward in a way that experts say violates the country's laws.

Similar processes usually take between two and four years, but according to the newspaper, in this case it has gone much faster and the concessions have been substantial. Several legal steps have been skipped.

In a letter seen by the newspaper, Vietnamese authorities write that the project needs support, arguing that it brings "special attention from the Trump administration and President Trump personally."

The president's son Eric Trump was on site this week for what is described as the first groundbreaking. The White House says there are no ethical problems even though Trump is still making money from the Trump Organization.

Landowners angered: "They're imposing their will on us"

Donald Trump's planned construction of a luxury golf complex outside the Vietnamese city of Hanoi has sparked considerable anger among local residents, writes the New York Times. Many feel they are being run over by the authorities in their effort to appease the American president.

People who own the land have reportedly been offered significantly lower prices than the price before the plans became known. Some were not even aware of the plans when the first symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held this week.

- They don't listen to us. They just come here and impose their will on us, says 57-year-old Le Thi Thanh, who harvests apples in the area.
