Sources: M23 rebels capture Uvira in Congo-Kinshasa
Rebels from the Rwandan-backed M23 guerrilla group have entered the town of Uvira in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, several media outlets report. It is the biggest escalation in the war in months.
Uvira, located near the border with Burundi, has served as both headquarters and military base for government-backed forces in the region since the provincial capital Bukavu fell to M23 at the beginning of the year.
The advance comes less than a week after the leaders of Congo-Kinshasa and Rwanda met with Donald Trump and endorsed a ceasefire. Both countries have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
Burundi: M23 advance is a middle finger to the US
Burundi Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana criticizes the fact that rebels from the Rwandan-backed M23 have taken the city of Uvira in eastern Congo-Kinshasa, near the border with Burundi.
In an interview with AFP, he points out that Congo-Kinshasa and Rwanda recently agreed to a ceasefire at a meeting with US President Donald Trump. It is “humiliating for everyone” that the war continues despite this, he says.
– It is really a slap in the face and a middle finger to the US.
In recent days, both Congo-Kinshasa and Rwanda have accused the other side of violating the ceasefire.
