The recently concluded UN meeting in Stockholm wants to speed up climate change - but encounters opposition.
India wants to open 100 previously closed coal mines.
And a "sneak change" opens up for more dirty energy in China.
Switching to renewable energy quickly is crucial to coping with climate change, but far from all countries are on board.
At the COP26 meeting in Glasgow in November, China and India sat cross-legged in the final negotiations and succeeded at the last minute in getting the world to "phase down" instead of "phase out" coal as an energy source.
Six months later, the meaning of the change begins to become clear.
While more than 100 environment ministers from around the world last week tried to find ways to increase the pace of climate work during the Stockholm + 50 meeting, the two countries are once again taking steps in the opposite direction.

More coal
India is the world's third largest emitter of carbon dioxide and at the same time one of the countries hardest hit by the climate crisis. During the spring, the country has been plagued by an extreme heat that is considered to test the limits of human survival(mänsklig överlevnad). Something that has led to the need for electricity for air conditioning to reach record levels and that has led to constant power outages.
The answer is called: col.
The country has, in the midst of climate change, been hit by a coal boom.
"Bad boys"
During the month of May, record amounts of coal were loaded on Indian railways, reports The Hindu. State giant Coal India has sharply increased its coal production and according to the Ministry of Coal, 100 previously closed mines will be reopened.

- Previously, we were branded as "bad boys" because we promoted fossil fuels and now we end up in the news because we do not deliver enough with it, said the country's Deputy Minister of Coal Anil Kumar Jain (vice kolminister)at a press conference in May.
Change in documents
From the world's largest emitter - China - comes a news that, if possible, is even more serious for those who have hoped for a rapid phasing out of coal.

In March 2021, an official at China's National Energy Administration stated that renewable energy would account for two-thirds of the increase in electricity consumption by 2025. But when the country's major planning document governing the transition to renewable energy between 2020 and 2025 was published on Wednesday, renewable sources account for more than 50 percent of the gradually increasing energy consumption during the period, reports Bloomberg(rapporterar Bloomberg). The change has not been commented on.
Beds for charcoal
According to the UN's climate panel IPCC, global emissions must begin to turn down by 2025 if we are to have an opportunity to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees - and avoid a climate catastrophe.
The write-down of the target can now pave the way for a significant part of China's rising energy needs during the next critical three years to be met - with coal.
China has promised to reach net zero emissions by 2060, India only by 2070.
