North Korea: Successful test with hypersonic robot

North Korea claims a successful test has been conducted with a new type of hypersonic robot. The test was conducted on Tuesday, Yonhap reports.

At a congress in 2021, dictator Kim-Jong Un promised to develop hypersonic robots, which can travel at low altitude and be controlled at the same time. They also travel at least five times the speed of sound. Such a robot would complete the Pyongyang-Seoul route in under two minutes.

North Korea's hope is that the robot will be able to outmaneuver the US and South Korea's robotic defenses, but analysts are unsure whether the country's hypersonic robots will reach the level Kim has dreamed of, AP writes.

The new robot will threaten the United States - Guam within firing range

North Korea's new hypersonic robot is designed to threaten American targets, writes the AP news agency after the latest weapons test.

- It appears to be an attempt to increase the range to attack US military bases, such as Guam, Shin Jong-Woo, a researcher at the Korea defense and security forum, told Yonhap.

If North Korea completes the robot, it will likely reach about 550 miles, putting Guam within firing range.

Now the robot can soon be rigorously tested, believes robot expert Chang Young-Keun. Such a test must take place under "realistic conditions" to test all functions, and it is therefore likely that the next test will send the robot over Japan and on to the Pacific Ocean, says Tianran Xu, analyst at the Open nuclear network, to NK News.
