Hawaii Raises Tourist Tax – To Go To Climate Work
The state of Hawaii has voted through a new law that raises the tourist tax to finance measures related to climate change, reports The Guardian. An additional fee of 0.75 percent will be introduced on the tourist tax that is already paid for, for example, hotel rooms or vacation homes.
The fee will also be increased for passengers on cruise ships that are in Hawaiian ports. The measure is the first of its kind in the United States.
– Hawaii is setting a new standard in the work against the climate crisis, says Democratic Governor Josh Green.
According to calculations, it will bring in around 100 million dollars annually.
Scientists identify cities in Europe as particularly vulnerable
The risk of forest fires and floods in European cities is particularly high in Amsterdam, Lisbon and Athens. This is reported by the Financial Times based on new research models.
Climate scientist Erin Coughlan de Perez tells the newspaper that cities have fared relatively well so far, but that it is largely a matter of luck. Heat records are broken almost every year, and if no major progress is made in reducing emissions, the number of days with extreme heat is expected to be significantly higher than today.
The cities mentioned have a “perfect mix” that makes them particularly vulnerable. In the case of Athens, it is dry forests in the mountainous areas around the Greek capital, which, combined with strong winds, can cause a potential fire to spread quickly towards populated areas.
