Two volcanoes have come to life in the easternmost parts of Russia.

According to scientists, larger eruptions may be imminent.

Ash clouds and glowing lava are spewing from the two volcanoes on the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's east coast, around 660 miles east of Moscow.

Kamchatka, located between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, is one of the areas in the world where geothermal energy is most concentrated. Around 30 active volcanoes crowd the peninsula.

From the only volcano, Klyutchevskaya Sopka, as many as ten explosions per hour have been recorded. Klyutchevskaya Sopka is Eurasia's highest active volcano with its 4,754 meters above sea level.

The sudden volcanic activity follows a strong earthquake in the area on Saturday.

Kamchatka is sparsely populated. The lava-spewing volcanoes are located around 45 kilometers from the peninsula's only major city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In the middle of the volcanoes lies a community with around 5,000 inhabitants.
