As expected, the Republicans have secured 218 seats, i.e. a majority, in the US House of Representatives after last week's midterm elections.

On the night of Thursday, the news finally came that the Republicans had secured a narrow, but still, majority in the US House of Representatives.

Republicans managed to collect the 218 seats needed for a majority in the 435-member House, giving them a narrow margin to stop President Joe Biden's political agenda for his remaining two years in office.

Biden congratulated

However, President Joe Biden congratulated his Republican opponents on the majority in the House of Representatives and said he is willing to work with them to serve the American people.

- I will work with anyone - Republican or Democrat - who is willing to work with me to deliver results for them, says Joe Biden.

California Republican Kevin McCarthy, who is believed to take over the House Speaker's seat from Democrat Nancy Pelosi, tweeted after the House majority announcement that he wants to deliver change for the American people.

"Americans are ready for a new direction and House Republicans are ready to deliver".

Presents challenges

Regardless of the victory in the House of Representatives, the Republicans are believed to have difficulty pushing through their policies. The narrow majority will also pose challenges and complicate the party's ability to govern in the chamber, according to observers.

Last week, the opposition party made a worse mid-term election than expected. To the surprise of many, they did not capture the upper house of Congress, the Senate, where the Democrats retain power.

The Democrats retaining control of the Senate is seen as a huge boost for President Joe Biden during his remaining two years in office.

Facts
Congress

Congress, seated in the Capitol, makes federal laws, decides on taxes and appropriations, and approves ministers and other high officials. It consists of the Senate with 100 members, two from each state, and the House of Representatives with 435 seats, distributed in relation to the states' population.

Congress can remove federal officials, including the president and judges, through impeachment. Such charges are brought by the House of Representatives and then proceed to the Senate, which acts as a court.  A two-thirds majority is required for conviction.
