Iraq's former defense minister Najah al-Shammari has been arrested at Arlanda, TV4 reports. Since 2019, Shammari has been suspected of several years of gross subsidy crimes in Sweden.
- He has been wanted, arrested in his absence, for almost a year and a half, says prosecutor Jens Nilsson to TV4.
According to TV4, Najah al-Shammari is said to have been stuck with the border police when he was wanted.
- He was arrested yesterday. It was when he came to Sweden. It is the same investigation from 2019, says Jens Nilsson.
Was on sick leave
According to the investigation from 2019, Najah al-Shammari was a resident of Iraq and received a full salary from the Iraqi state at the same time that he collected benefits from Sweden as sick leave.
- It is about both livelihood support and housing allowance. It is both the municipality and the Social Insurance Agency that have sent in the report, says Jens Nilsson, the prosecutor in charge of the police investigation, to TV4.
Najah al-Shammari registered as an emigrant when the criminal suspicions became known, but only a few years later he was said to be back in Sweden. A formal registration as resettled did not come until 2023. However, the authorities have not been able to get hold of him and some of the serious contribution offenses are being time-barred.

According to the Swedish Migration Agency, Najah al-Shammari came to Sweden in 2009 and received a permanent residence permit in 2011. In 2015, he became a Swedish citizen.
al-Shammari has been an officer and general in the Iraqi army during the 1990s and parts of the 2000s. He has also been investigated by the Swedish authorities for war crimes, but the case was later dropped.
