Russian invasion The world's response

US: New sanctions could threaten talks with Russia

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has commented on the US government's reluctance to impose new sanctions on Russia, reports Politico.

- If we did what everyone here wants us to do, which is to crush them with more sanctions, we probably wouldn't be able to talk to them about a ceasefire anymore. And who would talk to them then? he says during the NATO summit in The Hague.

Imposing new sanctions would be "basically admitting that (a ceasefire) is not going to happen for a long time," he says.

Rubio adds that the US does not believe that Russia will succeed in achieving its war goals in terms of conquering new Ukrainian territories.

Ukraine and Europe to establish a Russia tribunal

Ukraine and the Council of Europe have signed an agreement to establish a war tribunal to try high-ranking Russians for war crimes, reports AFP.

– We must clearly show that aggression leads to punishment and we must do it together, the whole of Europe, says Zelenskyj after signing the agreement with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset.

Berset says he hopes that as many countries in Europe as possible will join the agreement. The tribunal is expected to begin its work next year. Where it will be based is not yet clear.

Zelenskyj: Discussed the purchase of US weapons systems

Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Donald Trump discussed the purchase of US weapons systems at the NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday. Zelenskyj said this.

According to Zelenskyj, Ukraine is "ready to buy this equipment and support American weapons manufacturers". He adds that "Europe can help".

During his press conference, Trump was asked by a Ukrainian soldier's wife about the continued arms support to Ukraine. He vaguely replied that “we’ll see,” adding that the US and Israel also need the Patriot air defense systems that Kyiv wants.

Zelensky also writes on X that he held a meeting with Nordic leaders, where air defense and joint defense production were discussed, among other things.

“Ukraine values your support,” he writes.
