Hitler defeats Zielinski in French local elections

The mayoral election in the northeastern French town of Arcis-sur-Aube has become a global sensation – because of the names of the candidates. Charles Hittler and Antoine Renault-Zielinski fought for power in the town, which has just over 2,800 inhabitants.

When the votes were counted on Sunday evening, it was clear that the independent incumbent mayor Charles Hittler would be re-elected, writes Le Figaro.

Charles Hittler received 40 percent of the vote and Zielinski came in third place.

The attention surrounding the mayoral election has not gone down well with the incumbent mayor, who told the BBC that he has been teased about his name all his life.

– Now it is out of control. I have seen articles online that say ‘37 percent of the inhabitants of Arcis are Hitlerites’. My wife is crying, he continued.
