Israel calls up 100,000 reservists for Iran conflict
The Israeli military has mobilized 100,000 reservists as part of the ongoing conflict with Iran, writes the Times of Israel.
The soldiers have reportedly been sent to Israel's borders with Syria and Lebanon, among other places.
20,000 of the reservists have also been prepared for service on the "home front," which in practice means participating in rescue operations within Israel, according to the newspaper.
Israel has previously deployed 50,000 reservists to active duty.
17 dead in protests in Pakistan: "We will have nothing to do with the US"
At least 17 people in Pakistan have died in protests against the US and Israeli warfare, reports AFP.
Thousands of protesters are said to have taken to the streets after the news that Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed.
- We should not have anything in Pakistan that is linked to the United States, one of the protesters told the news agency.
Around a hundred protesters also tried to storm the American consulate, which prompted the police to counterattack.
According to hospital documents seen by AFP, at least nine of the protesters have died from gunshot wounds.
- Pakistan's military can crush the protests, but the political price for bear-hugging President Trump is rising rapidly, says Adam Weinstein, deputy director of the Quincy Institute's Middle East program in Washington, to the New York Times.
Expert: Iran's opposition is without a clear leader
The Iranian opposition is divided and without a clear leader. This is what Iran expert Rouzbeh Parsi tells DN.
The opposition's clearest candidate for leadership is Reza Pahlavi, son of the last Shah of Iran. However, Parsi says that he lacks the network in Iran that is required to take over power. It is not enough to bomb the leaders to death; someone must take over the ministries and make them function, he adds.
The question of who could lead the popular revolution that the US, Israel and Iran's regime critics so desperately want to see remains unanswered.
- The US has only had a military plan. When it comes to the future rule of Iran, all they have done is kick a billiard ball into a pile of billiard balls. Where those balls end up remains to be seen, says Rouzbeh Parsi.
