Another top politician in China is being sidelined

A top politician in China's powerful Politburo is being investigated for serious crimes, in an escalating purge of the top echelons of power.
Ma Xingrui, 66, has been a member of the Communist Party's Politburo since 2022. A few months ago, China analysts noted that he was no longer attending meetings or being seen in public.
State media reported briefly on Friday that Ma was being investigated for alleged violations of the law and was the subject of a disciplinary case, following a pattern that has prevailed in previous cases where President Xi Jinping has forced out or imprisoned people at the top of power.
Xi has thus forced aside three Politburo members since December, the largest purge at that level in decades.
