Elections in Hungary

Polling stations have closed in Hungary – new poll gives Tisza a big advantage

Polling stations in Hungary closed at 7 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., voter turnout was 77.8 percent, according to the election authority’s figures – the highest ever in the country.

There will be no exit polls, but when the polling stations closed, the temporary ban on publishing new opinion polls in connection with the vote was lifted.

The independent news site Telex has now published a fresh poll conducted by the independent 21 Research Center between Wednesday and Sunday.

According to it, Péter Magyar’s opposition party Tisza will receive a full 55 percent of the vote, compared to 38 percent for Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz. Previous polls have given Tisza around 50 percent of the support and Fidesz 40 percent.

The vote count is being gradually updated by the election authority. Early results are expected late tonight.

The election in Hungary — it mattersV

  • Before the election, the opposition party Tisza under Péter Magyar has been leading in opinion polls over Viktor Orbán's Fidesz.
  • The election is seen by many as a choice between the more EU-friendly Magyar and the Russia-backed Orbán. One of the most important issues of the election has been support for Ukraine.
  • The election campaign has been marked by accusations of Russian influence, leaks from EU meetings to the Kremlin and alleged attempts at election manipulation.
  • US Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump have publicly supported Orbán, while EU countries and France have expressed concern about Hungary's actions towards Russia.
  • The OSCE is monitoring the election with international observers, and several analyses indicate that the outcome could have a major impact on the EU's future decision-making processes.
