Magyar wants to take office quickly: "No time to lose"
Sunday's election winner Péter Magyar aims to be sworn in as Hungary's prime minister as early as May 5, Reuters reports.
- We have no time to lose, he said during a speech on Monday.
He also urged the president to call a first session of the new parliament as soon as the election results are confirmed.
Several promises from Magyar - to shut down state media
Péter Magyar, who won the Hungarian election last night, has already made several promises about his first term as prime minister.
Among other things, he will shut down news broadcasts from Hungary's state media until impartial reporting can be ensured, he told reporters according to Reuters.
Magyar also says that he will combat corruption, including by introducing a new anti-corruption authority. He also wants to use the supermajority the party has won in parliament to change the constitution, so that a prime minister can only serve two terms.
Although Magyar was clearly the more pro-Ukrainian of the two candidates in the election, he says he does not support a fast track to the EU for Ukraine.
“We are talking about a country at war. It is out of the question for the EU to let a country at war in,” he says.
