Middle East Crisis Iran Negotiations

Iranian regime agreed with US on “some issues”

Iran agreed with the US on “some issues” during the peace talks in Pakistan. This is what Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, told the Iranian state news agency IRNA, according to The Telegraph.

He also says that they had not expected to reach an agreement after only one day of negotiations, AFP reports, citing the state-run Irib.

It does not go into what the countries actually agreed on. The US says the talks collapsed when Iran did not agree to the requirement not to develop nuclear weapons. According to Iran, the US made “unreasonable” demands to control the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

The countries have not agreed on future negotiations. The Iranian regime states that diplomacy is continuing with Pakistan and other “friends” in the region.

Bildt puzzled: “Strange not to mention Hormuz”

It is “strange” that JD Vance did not bring up the Strait of Hormuz when the vice president announced that negotiations between the US and Iran had collapsed. This is what former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Sveriges Radio Ekot.

– From a European perspective, that is the crucial issue. There has obviously been nothing achieved at all, he says.

Bildt also believes that it is strange that the talks ended so quickly because complicated negotiations always take “considerable time”.

JD Vance stated at a press conference that the talks stalled after Iran did not agree to the US demands regarding nuclear weapons. Iran, for its part, has said that the US demands control over the security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Analysis: They left when the price was too high – but both see themselves as sellers

There is a risk that the war will resume, writes Sky News analyst Dominic Waghorn after peace talks between Iran and the US broke down. After 21 hours of negotiations in Pakistan, JD Vance stated that they had not agreed with Iran on several important points, including the issue of nuclear weapons. Iran, for its part, claims that the American conditions were unreasonable.

“In the logic of a Middle Eastern bazaar, this is the moment when the buyer leaves the shop with the justification that the price is too high. But in this case, both parties believe that they are sellers,” he writes.

CNN analyst Nic Robertson is on the same track and believes that many are asking what is happening with the ongoing ceasefire. He also believes that the unwillingness of both parties to compromise will increase the global economic unrest further.

“The failure of the US-Iran talks is a blow to hopes of finding a way out of the crisis.”

The world calls for new talks between the US and Iran

Leaders in several countries have come out and urged the US and Iran to return to the negotiating table, AFP reports.

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who held meetings with both the American and Iranian delegations on Saturday, said in a statement that both countries must maintain the ceasefire.

- Pakistan will continue to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the US in the coming days, he said on state Pakistani television.

A spokesman for the EU emphasizes that diplomacy is "necessary" to resolve the conflict. Britain and Australia both express disappointment at the lack of agreement.

Russia's Vladimir Putin has also offered his help in mediating peace in the Middle East.
