Analysis: Israel lacks both strategy and exit plan
Six months into the war in Gaza, Israel is far from achieving its goals. It lacks both a strategy and a credible exit plan, write several analysts ahead of the half-year anniversary of the Hamas terror attack in Israel.
Israel entered Gaza with two goals: To wipe out Hamas and bring home the hostages. But Hamas' top two leaders, and thousands of its members, are still alive and a hundred of the hostages are still in Gaza, points out Daniel Byman in Foreign Affairs.
The big problem is that Israel must have a plan for how Gaza will be governed when it leaves the area. Without one, Hamas will be free to start rebuilding itself. According to Byman, Israel has no ideas on this matter. The most likely alternative, the Palestinian Authority, is categorically rejected.
"The result is a war with less and less results, with no plan for what comes next," writes Byman.
"Israel is facing an impossible situation because the goal of wiping out Hamas is both impossible to fulfill and very popular at home."
The remains of Israeli hostages brought to Israel
The remains of an Israeli man taken hostage by Palestinian terrorists on October 7 have been returned to Israel. This is reported by several media with reference to the Israeli military IDF.
47-year-old Elad Katzir lived on Kibbutz Nir Oz and was kidnapped by men from Islamic Jihad. According to the IDF, he was murdered by the same terrorist group.
