Failure of the billion-dollar pier in Gaza - the future uncertain

A thousand American soldiers and sailors were involved in the construction, which cost over two billion kroner. But 37 days after the inauguration of the floating pier in Gaza, its future is uncertain, writes The Guardian.

The pier has proved difficult to cope with the weather conditions and has remained open for twelve days since its inauguration. Much of the emergency aid that arrives is stuck on the beach. The World Food Program has stopped collecting the boxes due to a security review.

Researcher Stephen Morrison says the project was misconceived by the US from the start.

- They didn't fully understand what was going to happen with the weather. So the Department of Defense abandons it, humiliated, he says.

However, the Pentagon denies having made any decision to stop using the pier.

"Netanyahu knows he's leaving when the hostages are home"

Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's actions during the Gaza war. It was one in a series of large protest demonstrations.

The demonstrators demanded new elections and that Israel do everything in its power to bring the hostages home from Gaza. Many accused Netanyahu of slowing down the process.

- You are probably happy that Hamas did not give an answer (about the ceasefire proposal, ed. note) because you know that if the hostages come home, you will go out, Danny Elgarat, whose brother is held captive by Hamas, said in a speech to Netanyahu.
