Reactions to Trump's Tariffs

Expert: "New Tariffs Give Asia and Africa to China"

China's reactions to the US tariffs are expected to stimulate domestic demand and build deeper trade relations with other countries, experts CNBC spoke to say.

- I don't think the immediate response will be about retaliatory tariffs, says Bruce Pang, adjunct professor at CUHK Business School.

In the Chinese export hub of Yiwu, the business community seemed to shrug its shoulders at the tariffs and assess that the US has more to lose.

- The reality is that the new tariffs basically give almost all of Asia and Africa to China, and the US is not prepared, says Shanghai-based Cameron Johnson, senior partner at Tidalwave Solutions, to CNBC.

Macron: Europe should pause its investments in the US

French President Emmanuel Macron is urging European companies to pause their investments in the US in response to the new tariffs. Politico reports.

According to Macron, the pause should apply until “things have been clarified.”

“What message are we sending if big European players invest billions of euros in the American economy when the United States attacks us?” Macron said during a meeting with representatives of sectors affected by the tariffs.

Finance Minister Erik Lombard agrees, warning companies against trying to carve out their own deals with the United States.

“It is clear that if a big French company agrees to open a factory in the United States, it gives the Americans a point,” he said, according to AFP.
