Haakon has sworn the oath in the Storting: “I promise and swear”

King Haakon VIII has taken the oath of allegiance in the Storting, thus completing the ascendance of the throne in Norway. This is reported by several Norwegian media outlets.

“I promise and swear to govern the Kingdom of Norway in accordance with its constitution and laws, so help me God the Almighty and the All-Knowing,” the oath read.

Haakon was given the title immediately after King Harald’s death, but must take the oath according to the provisions of the constitution from 1814. In the oath, he commits to be loyal to the Storting, the Norwegian parliament, and its decisions.

Queen Mette-Marit was supposed to attend, but had to cancel after she suffered complications after her lung transplant.

Queen Mette-Marit was supposed to attend her husband King Haakon's oath of allegiance in the Storting today, but has had to cancel. The Norwegian royal family announced this.

The reason is that she has suffered complications after the lung transplant she underwent in mid-June.

- It is not uncommon for complications to arise after a lung transplant. The Queen has had complications in some cases since the operation, including today, says lung doctor Are Holm at Rikshospitalet in a press release.

Instead, she will need to be observed during the day.

Haakon will take the oath at 1:00 p.m., when, among others, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Queen Sonja will be present.

In connection with Haakon VIII formally assuming the Norwegian throne, Carl XVI Gustaf has sent a telegram. This is reported by Dagbladet.

“I want to be one of the first to express my warmest wishes for success to you and Queen Mette-Marit for the great task that now lies before you,” writes the king, who is also King Haakon’s godfather.

“It is my hope that you feel great support from your godfather, from your Swedish family and from the entire Swedish people,” he concludes.
