More than a thousand people have been found dead in the wake of the enormous mudslide in the Himalayas. Thousands more are still missing.

Authorities in Nepal announce that 987 people have been found and confirmed dead after the disaster in the border regions with Tibet on Wednesday last week. On the other side of the border, Chinese authorities report 16 deaths.

3,916 people are reported missing in Nepal, of whom more than 500 are foreign nationals. In China, more than 500 are reported missing, of whom about half are described as foreign nationals.

Tibetan rights groups are raising the alarm that Chinese authorities are covering up the extent of the disaster and a higher death toll, reports The Guardian, among others. China's Foreign Ministry dismisses it as smear campaign.
