Melania Trump bjuder in Ukraina och Ryssland i Vita huset
Abu Dhabi would be fine.
But first, a medal for Melania Trump.
Today, the First Lady is hosting representatives from both countries ahead of upcoming peace talks.
On Thursday, Melania Trump is opening the White House to representatives from Ukraine and Russia.
The White House describes the meeting as an “extraordinary moment in American history.”
Just yesterday, she was awarded a medal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for her “significant personal contribution to humanitarian aid for Ukraine.”
Asking for suggestions on Facebook
Kirill Dmitriev, an advisor to Moscow on international economic cooperation, and human rights ombudsman Yana Lantratova have stated that they will attend, “provided that all logistical arrangements work out,” reports AFP, citing the Russian state news agency TASS.
Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, wrote on Facebook on Wednesday that he was on his way to Washington.
“Important meetings lie ahead. But while I am traveling, I want to ask you one thing: If you could convey a single message to U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, what would you say to her?” he wrote.
The meeting takes place the day after Zelenskyy’s hour-and-a-half-long phone call with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
Zelenskyy stated that the conversation was “very detailed” and concerned next week’s meeting in Abu Dhabi.
At that meeting, representatives from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine are expected to discuss the possibilities for a peace agreement.
The White House hopes that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is more open to compromise than in the past—especially after Donald Trump agreed to lift sanctions on Russian diesel sales and other measures welcomed by Moscow, reports Axios.
Melania Trump is also set to deliver a speech at the White House this evening regarding the ceasefire in Oleshky.
Refused an extension
She is said to have been the one who negotiated the local ceasefire. It was in effect for six days and expired this past Sunday. According to Melania Trump, a total of 800 people were evacuated during that period.
Russia did not agree to an extension of the ceasefire, and according to Ukraine, it served as a cover for a Russian regrouping.
Since then, extensive Russian attacks have been taking place across Ukraine.
At least 40 people were killed in an attack on an aid center in Kamysjuvacha earlier this week.
