Amidst a wave of protest – general strike in France
French President Emmanuel Macron faces further pressure today as hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part in demonstrations across France, reports TT.
The country’s trade unions have called for a general strike—focused on “wages, public services, employment, and industry”—with up to 700,000 people expected to take to the streets.
“The anger is immense. The situation in the country is fragile. We must address urgent social and environmental issues without delay,” the trade union alliance stated.
The situation in France has been turbulent of late. What began as student-led protests culminated on October 17 in the worst rioting France has seen in years.
Ministry for Foreign Affairs to Swedes in France: “Avoid crowds”
In light of the general strike in France, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs is urging Swedes in the country to remain vigilant, avoid crowds, and follow the instructions of the authorities.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to demonstrate across the country today, following a call by trade unions for a nationwide strike.
“Burning barricades and clashes between protesters and police may occur, and traffic disruptions are possible,” the Ministry for Foreign Affairs writes on its website.
Local curfews may also be imposed on short notice, following the unrest seen over the past few days in Paris, Lyon, Lille, and Marseille.
