Trump: Will accept the election result
US President Donald Trump says he will accept the election result and notes that the Democrats have done a “good job.”
“I am definitely willing to accept the results,” he tells The New York Times.
He tells the newspaper that he intends to work with the Democrats, adding that he and his administration “look forward to it.”
“We will likely find a solution.”
In a live broadcast on Fox News, the president says he is “a little surprised” by the election outcome.
“I thought we would do better. We ran a fantastic campaign.”
At the same time, he takes the opportunity to praise the opposition:
“I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. They fought hard,” he tells Fox News.
Iran played a role
He also suggests that the issue of Iran has had a significant impact on the election results.
“I think Iran was a part of it, but at the same time, people understand the significance of what I have done regarding Iran,” the president says.
Early in the morning (Swedish time), the president also posted on Truth Social. Among other things, he shared an image of a red cap—resembling the MAGA caps he and his supporters typically wear—but this time bearing the word “veto.”
“Should have won”
In his interview with Fox News, the president states that he plans to exercise his veto power. “It is one of the most powerful authorities a president possesses,” he says.
However, in a conversation with Politico, Trump also notes that—while he has the right to veto legislation that reaches his desk—he “doesn’t want to sit there for two years vetoing everything.”
He does not wish to “blame anyone” for the loss, but reiterates to Politico what he had previously written on Truth Social earlier that election night:
“If I had been on the ballot, we would have won. We would have won everything very easily.”
