Counterfeiting of history, threats, and so-called peacekeeping forces.
That was the content of Russian President Vladimir Putin's hour-long speech.
It all culminated in Russia declaring separatist-controlled Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine independent.
About Ukraine and NATO: Should Ukraine join the NATO alliance, Russia sees it as a direct threat to security, Putin said. He described the possibility of NATO being expanded with more members as "anti-Russian policy" on the part of the United States, and something that the Americans had forced on other countries. He also raised the counter-arguments from the EU, that Ukraine is not close to joining NATO today because it does not live up to the requirements for membership. "Our answer is: if not tomorrow, then the day after tomorrow. What does it change in the historical perspective? Nothing, in principle ”. He also said of NATO: "They are repeatedly trying to convince us that NATO is a peace-loving defense alliance, and that there is no threat to Russia. They want us to take them at their word. But we know the true value of such words ”.
On threats to Russia: NATO membership for Ukraine would dramatically increase military threats against Russia, according to Putin. "Let me explain that the United States' strategic planning entails the possibility of so-called preventive attacks on enemy missile systems. And who is the main enemy of the United States and NATO? We know that. It's Russia. In NATO documents, our country is officially portrayed as a direct threat to NATO security. And Ukraine will act as a springboard for an attack. "
On Ukraine's history and present: According to Putin, Ukraine has never had its own genuine state. "Today's Ukraine was created entirely by Russia, more specifically Bolshevik Communist Russia," the Russian president said. According to him, that process must have started after the revolution of 1917 when Soviet Ukraine arose, and therefore the country should be called Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's Ukraine. "He is the creator and architect" of Ukraine, according to Putin, who referred to historical documents. He also said that "ungrateful descendants have now destroyed the Lenin Monument and call it decommunication". And then said: "Do you want decommunication? Sure, it's going well. But it is unnecessary to stop halfway. We will show you what real decommissioning means for Ukraine ”.
Recognition of separatist-controlled areas: Putin began by saying that those who have chosen the path of violence, with bloodshed and lawlessness, see no other solution for Donbass than the military. And that is why he now considers it necessary to take the decision that should have been taken a long time ago: to recognize the independence and sovereignty of Donetsk and Luhank, whom he called the People's Republics. "I call on the Russian Parliament to support this decision and to ratify the Treaty on Friendship and Joint Assistance to the Republics." He also urged those in power in Kiev to refrain from hostility: "Otherwise, all responsibility for continued bloodshed falls entirely on the regime that controls Ukrainian territory."
"Peacekeeping forces": Shortly after Putin's speech, information came that many believe indicates that the invasion of Ukraine has now begun: So-called "peacekeeping forces" are being sent from Russia to Luhansk and Donbass.
