Joe Biden attacks his predecessor.

In a speech, he warns against former US President Donald Trump and his supporters.

- Donald Trump and the Maga Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundation of our republic, says Biden.

US President Joe Biden doesn't hold back when he talks about his successor and former President Donald Trump.

In a speech to the nation, Joe Biden said that Trump's supporters want to take the United States back in time, the  BBC reports.

- For a long time, we told ourselves that American democracy is a given. But it isn't. We must defend it. Protect it. Stand up for it. Every one of us, Joe Biden said in his speech.

"Wants to bring the country back in time"

Biden was careful to point out that it's not about all Republicans being so-called Maga supporters, (named after Trump's slogan Make America Great Again)

- Maga supporters are determined to take this country back in time, Biden said and continued:

- But there is no doubt that the Republican Party today is largely run by Donald Trump and Maga Republicans and it is a threat to our country.

Met with resistance

The move comes with just over two months to go until the mid-term elections in the United States.

It didn't take long before Biden was countered by Republicans. Not far from the place where Biden gave his speech, his opponents had gathered.

Slogans were shouted, and Biden responded that those kinds of protesters rarely "suffer from good behavior."

- They have every right to be angry, this is a democracy, said Biden.
