Four leaks have been discovered on Nord Stream 1 and 2.
According to seismologists in several countries, they were most likely caused by explosive charges.
This is what we now know about the gas leaks.
** The pressure in Nord Stream 2 fell during the night to Monday from 105 to 7 bar. Later on Monday, a leak was confirmed by the discovery of large areas of bubbles on the surface off the Danish island of Bornholm. Hours later, the two leaks were discovered on Nord Stream 1, barely seven kilometers apart. On Wednesday, a fourth leak was confirmed, this one was discovered on Tuesday and originates from Nord Stream 2.
** Nord Stream 1 thus has two leaks, one in the Swedish economic zone approximately at the height of Simrishamn. Nord Stream 2 also has two leaks, one of which is in the Danish economic zone, southeast of Bornholm. The second leak is located in the Swedish economic zone and measures 200 meters in diameter. The distance between the leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2 is estimated to be 75 kilometers, and the distance between the leaks in Nord Stream 1 is approximately six kilometers.
** Extensive amounts of gas are believed to have leaked, but it is unclear how much. Nord Stream 2 alone, which has never been put into use, is estimated to contain 300 million cubic meters of stagnant gas. Those who live on the coast near the emissions need not worry. However, the release may cause minor damage to the environment. However, the leaks should not pose any threat to current gas stocks, as Nord Stream 1 never reopened in September as planned, following a planned shutdown for maintenance. Films from the scene show how the gas causes bubbles on the surface of the water.
**According to seismologists in several countries, everything indicates that explosions caused the leaks. Björn Lund at Uppsala University tells Aftonbladet that he is 95 percent sure of that because earthquakes produce a completely different result on the measuring instruments. Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at a press conference on Tuesday evening that it is probably sabotage and a "deliberate act". However, she emphasized that the whole thing is not an attack on Sweden.
** It is unclear exactly how much gas is in the leaking lines, but according to information to Aftonbladet, Nord Stream 1 and 2 will not be able to be examined until they are completely empty of gas. That could take up to two weeks, multiple sources said Tuesday night.
