Gazprom claimed that the stoppage of gas to Europe was due to "a technical error".

But now the Russian regime admits that it is a response to Western sanctions.

- Of course, life will get worse for people in Europe, said spokesman Dmitry Peskov to the Financial Times.

Russian gas supplies to Europe will not resume until "the collective West" lifts the sanctions against Russia, says Dmitry Peskov.

It is the sharpest demand Russia has made since the conflict began, writes the Financial Times.

Peskov believes that the growing energy crisis in Europe may hinder the West's support for Ukraine.

- Of course, life is getting worse for people, businessmen and companies in Europe. And of course ordinary people in these countries will have more and more questions for their leaders, he says.

The gas giant Gazprom has previously claimed that an oil leak was behind the closure of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline and the EU subsequently chose to withdraw some sanctions so that the turbines could be repaired.

"Made the gas a weapon"

Meanwhile, European leaders have said there is nothing stopping Gazprom from supplying the continent with gas and accused Russia of weaponizing the gas.

Peskov says supplies cannot resume until the West lifts sanctions.

- The problems with pumping gas arose because of the sanctions that Western countries imposed on our country and several companies, he says.
