Two in three Republicans: Trump is protected by God
65 percent of Republicans believe that Donald Trump is protected by God's providence. Eleven percent of Democrats agree. This is according to a new survey from Reuters/Ipsos.
At the same time, the survey indicates that in that case not everyone feels completely secure with God's plan: 80 percent of voters - in both camps - believe that the situation in the country is "derailing".
The US stands out as one of the few very rich countries where a very large percentage are religious. 77 percent of the American population says they believe in God. The corresponding figure in Canada is 56 percent and in Great Britain 39.

EU source: Vance would be a disaster for Ukraine
The choice of JD Vance as Donald Trump's vice presidential candidate is not good news for Europe, writes Politico. The site describes Vance as "one of the most isolationist" members of the Republican Party.
In his role as a senator, he has been one of the most vocal critics of US aid to Ukraine, and he has repeatedly accused European countries of not contributing enough. A high-ranking EU source tells Politico that Vance as vice president would mean a "disaster" for Ukraine, and by extension also the EU.
On a question about Russia and Ukraine in his first interview as a vice presidential candidate, Vance told Fox News that Donald Trump will negotiate an end to the war as quickly as possible, "so that the United States can focus on the real problem, which is China."

Analysis: The weapons debate will quieten down this time as well
Thomas Matthew Crooks fired an AR-15 at Trump – an assault weapon originally developed for soldiers but today owned by a fifth of America's gun owners.
The AR-15 has taken on a leading role in the American arms debate - and for the arms lobby it has become something of a symbol of freedom and masculinity, writes SvD's Måns Wadensjö.
"After every high-profile deed, the debate about a ban comes to life, but so far it has always fallen asleep again before a change in the law came about."
The gun debate in the US is too emotionally driven and irrational for anything to happen, writes DN's Erik Helmerson.
There are obvious measures that should have been taken a long time ago, he believes – permit requirements for handguns, which over half of the states today do not have, and increased taxes.
"Raising the price by one percent reduces demand by 2 to 3 percent. Why not start there?”

Biden: Ban the weapon used against Trump
Joe Biden on Tuesday repeated the demand to ban the AR-15 automatic weapon, which he has done on several previous occasions. This is reported by AFP.
- Help me get these weapons of war off the streets of America. An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump [...] It is time to ban them, he said in a speech to the African-American interest organization NAACP.
He adds that he "did it before and can do it again", implying that he was involved in the ban that was introduced between 1994 and 2004.
