Protests on the streets of Caracas - the police respond with tear gas

Protests have erupted in Venezuela's capital Caracas after Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the already hotly contested election. The police have fired tear gas at the demonstrators, writes AFP.

Maduro's authority formally declares Maduro the victor

Venezuela's government-loyal electorate has now formally declared Nicolás Maduro as re-elected president of the country, AP writes.

The outside world meets the election results with great skepticism. Just that few countries have recognized Maduro as the winner. The UN demands a transparent reporting of the election results.

The opposition also declared themselves victorious last night.

- The Venezuelans and the whole world know what happened, says the opposition's presidential candidate Edmundo González.

The capital Caracas is today characterized by a strange silence, write El País and Clarin. The police were on hand, but apart from a few minor demonstrations, things have been calm so far. A few Maduro supporters dutifully celebrated in the square. The silence was also broken by people who were "close to drowning in tears".
