The opposition disputes the election results: "We won"

Venezuela's opposition disputes President Nicolás Maduro's alleged victory in the presidential election, AFP reports.

Maduro was declared the winner of the country's election on Monday morning, Swedish time.

The opposition claims that their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, received 70 percent of the vote. According to the electoral authority, he got 44 percent.

- We want to say to all of Venezuela and the world that Venezuela has a new president-elect and that is Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. We won, says opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

Before the election, the opposition expressed concerns about electoral fraud. According to opinion polls, Gonzalez Urrutia appeared headed for a convincing victory.

Blinken's demands on Venezuela: Publish the votes

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken calls on Venezuela's electoral authority to publish the vote count in Sunday's election to ensure that everything went right, writes Reuters.

"The United States applauds the Venezuelan people for their participation in the July 28 presidential election despite significant challenges and deep concerns about the process," Blinken wrote in a statement, according to the news agency.

Incumbent President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of Venezuela's election, reportedly winning 51 percent of the vote - a result that is expected to be disputed.
