Fires and new heat records in California - over 50 degrees
The emergency services are working to put out several fires in California in the western United States after the weekend's heat wave in the country. Around 5,000 hectares of land have burned up in an extensive fire dubbed the Lake Fire.
The rescue service states that the fire is "extreme" and warns that it may grow larger as a result of high temperatures, according to the AP news agency.
According to the LA Times, the temperature in Palm Springs in the eastern parts of Los Angeles has been over 50 degrees this weekend, which is a new heat record.

Historic heat wave in the USA - 130 million affected
An extreme heat wave that is currently plaguing large parts of the United States is expected to worsen further, AP writes. Around 130 million people live in areas that are currently covered by some form of heat warning, and heat records have been broken on a regular basis.
The weather agency NWS calls the heat wave "dangerous and historic" and states that the heat is expected to remain for at least another week.
Temperatures of over 37 degrees are expected in several places, and locally it could be another ten degrees warmer.
