AI and smart watches to stop new tragedy in Mecca
Saudi Arabia has taken several measures to ensure that last year's tragedy during the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca is not repeated this week, writes The Independent. Among other things, participants will receive smart devices that measure heart rate and sound an alarm if there are signs of fatigue.
Drones with thermal cameras will be used and with the help of AI software it is hoped to be able to create a picture of the situation.
- This year we are using technology and collaborating with international groups to ensure that pilgrims are registered and receive the protection they need, says Health Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel.
During last year's pilgrimage, around 1,300 people died in the extreme heat. A clear majority were unregistered and the authorities have several new tools to ensure that everyone participating this year is registered.
This year's pilgrimage begins on Wednesday, June 4.
270,000 stopped ahead of Mecca pilgrimage
Saudi authorities have stopped almost 270,000 people from entering Mecca because they lack permits to perform this year's pilgrimage, which begins on Wednesday. The Independent reports.
80 percent of the approximately 1,300 people who died during last year's scorching heat were not registered, and were therefore unable to use air-conditioned areas. This year, authorities want to ensure that the number of unregistered people is significantly limited. Anyone participating without a permit risks deportation and a fine of almost SEK 50,000.
Around 400 tour operators have had their permits revoked. Temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected when more than a million Muslims perform the pilgrimage.
