Trzaskowski in narrow lead according to first figures
The pro-EU liberal candidate Rafal Trzaskowski is in a narrow lead in the Polish presidential election, the first exit poll according to Reuters shows.
He receives 50.3 percent of the vote and the opponent candidate Karol Nawrocki receives 49.7 percent.
Trzaskowski has declared himself the winner of the election and says in a statement that he will be "a president for all Poles".
Nawrocki is also optimistic in his speech during the election vigil.
- We will win and we will save Poland, he says.
The official result is expected to be confirmed on Monday.
Voters Divided: “Love God and Fatherland”
The election campaign for the Polish presidential election has shown major ideological differences between national conservative Karol Nawrocki and liberal and pro-EU Rafal Trzaskowski, reports AP.
Katarzyna Malek, a 29-year-old Warsaw resident, is voting for Trzaskowski, whose campaign has been about easing abortion laws, restoring the independence of the judiciary and strengthening ties with other European countries. The 29-year-old sees the liberal as the most competent candidate.
– I hope for less division.
82-year-old Wladyslawa Wasowska is instead choosing the right-wing candidate, who she believes is the obvious choice for someone who defines themselves as a patriot.
– I am a right-wing conservative. I love God, the church and the fatherland.
