Over the past week, Crown Prince
 Mohammed bin Salman
has been pushing for US President
Donald Trump

to continue the war against
Iran
, US officials with insight into the conversations told the New York Times.

In a phone call, the crown prince has argued that Iran poses a long-term threat to the Gulf, which can only disappear if the regime is overthrown.

At the same time, he has claimed that the Israeli and US warfare represents a “historic opportunity” to reshape the Middle East. And that it would be a mistake to scale back the attacks, which Trump has hinted at. Mohammed bin Salman has also pushed for attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure to weaken the government in Tehran.

He has also advocated ground operations in Iran, according to the sources.

Fredssamtal mellan USA och Iran kan inledas redan nästa vecka i Pakistan, uppger The Guardian och hänvisar till källor.

There is concern within both Saudi Arabia and the US that a prolonged conflict could lead to more Iranian attacks on Saudi oil facilities and that the US could be drawn into a protracted war, the newspaper writes.

The Saudi government denies the reports of war.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always supported a peaceful resolution to this conflict, even before it began,” the Saudi government said in a statement, announcing that it is in close contact with the Trump administration.

Karoline Leavitt, press secretary at the White House, says that they do not comment on Trump’s “private conversations.”
